Samuel Powel School + Science Leadership Academy
Elementary and Middle Schools | Philadelphia, PA
This collaboration between the Samuel Powel Elementary School, the Science Leadership Academy, and Drexel University resulted in an 87,000-square foot, two-story building housing an elementary school (grades K-5) and a middle school (grades 6-8). The site was challenged by sloped topography, access, and the need to accommodate a future Drexel building.
We initially provided feasibility analysis and concept planning for civil engineering components such as site layout, access and parking, stormwater management, utilities, and permitting requirements. The design recommendations required consideration of sustainability, construction, and budget goals. Porous rubber play surfaces surrounded by urban green space manage stormwater while providing space for outdoor play and exercise.
Once the $33.5 million project moved forward, we completed civil engineering design and permitting services through the construction administration phase. Regulatory approvals encompassed Planning Commission reviews; technical review by the Philadelphia Water Department; National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permitting; SEPTA coordination; and Streets Department reviews and approvals.
The schools share a city block with the new Drexel Health Sciences Building, for which Meliora also provided civil engineering and permitting. The site design for both projects was carefully coordinated, and a new walkway was created between the two buildings.
